While reading John D. Roth’s social history of Goshen College, the words of Ecclesiastes 1:9 came to mind: “There is nothing new under the sun.”
The MC USA Constituency Leaders Council (CLC) reflected on the question, “What does it mean to do church together?” at its biannual meeting at College Mennonite Church, Goshen, Indiana, on March 21-23, 2024. Moderator-elect Marty Lehman presided over the meeting, which introduced leaders to MC USA’s new strategic plan, invited them to participate in reinvention exercises, and offered inspiration through storytelling.
This year, 824 students are enrolled at Goshen College. They come to Goshen from all over the world.
On Wednesday evening, I stood in front of about 30 college students and taught a history lesson. I was asked to talk about Goshen restaurant history at a small event over the dinner hour at Goshen College. Students in Associate Professor Philipp Gollner’s American Foodways class invited others on campus to join them for some food from Goshen restaurants. I think that was the draw of this event, not someone giving a brief talk.

Proof that teachers and students can impact each other’s lives can be witnessed in the mutual admiration between educator Robina Sommers and her student Jason DuBois. Their relationship developed each of the four times Sommers had DuBois as a student.
Goshen College is set to advance its commitment to fostering student success and reducing the equity gap, thanks to a $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
